Job Description:


APPOINTMENT: Tenure Track/Unit A Faculty, beginning August 2022; Assistant Professor of Elementary Science or Social Studies Education located at the Quad Cities (QC) campus. Nine-month appointment with possible summer teaching.

RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidate will teach undergraduate methods courses for prospective early childhood, elementary, or middle school teachers in science and/or social studies education in the Curriculum and Instruction area within the School of Education; additionally, the successful candidate will supervise pre-service teachers in completing their required field experiences within a range of courses.

Requirements:


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. A terminal degree (EdD/PhD) in Elementary Science Education, Elementary Social Studies Education, or closely related field at the time of appointment (i.e., experience with social studies if degree is in science; science, if the degree is in social studies/history). ABD candidates will be considered, but degree must be in-hand at the time of appointment.

2. A minimum of three years' experience in teaching either science or social studies within the K-8 grade range.

3. Demonstrated potential for scholarly contribution to the field as evidenced by refereed presentations at regional, national and/or international conferences; refereed articles, book chapters, books or other publications.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

University teaching experience; strong background in general science, a STEM field or history/social studies; background in the area not reflected in the terminal degree; knowledge of trends in elementary education related to culturally responsive and sustaining pedagogies in either science or social studies, education for social justice and educational equity; experience working with a diverse range of learner needs, experiences, or backgrounds; desire to seek or obtain grant funding; proficiency with technologies and/or equipment for teaching science or social studies including online teaching experience; experience supervising student teachers; commitment to and experience partnering with internal university entities, schools, families, communities, and/or regional offices of education; strong collaboration skills. Willingness to travel to the Macomb campus for various forms of service including School of Education or university related events.

For a degree to be considered, it must be conferred from a regionally accredited degree-granting institution of higher education (or equivalent from an international accrediting body).

THE DEPARTMENT:

SCHOOL OF EDUCATION: Located within the College of Education and Human Services, the School of Education (SOE) is composed of faculty involved in diverse fields of expertise, professional activities, and interests. The SOE was formed in Fall 2019 by a merger of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Department of Educational Studies.

We seek to recruit a capable, diverse student body and to focus on continuous improvement of our programs by creating more meaningful clinical experiences for our students, establishing a series of knowledge and application assessments, and cultivating effective internal and external relationships.

We offer seven undergraduate degrees that lead to a teaching license, one undergraduate degree in the general study of education, seven advanced degrees, and numerous endorsement programs.

THE UNIVERSITY: Since 1902, Western Illinois University has provided outstanding educational opportunities to individuals in west central Illinois and well beyond our region and state. WIU's traditional residential campus in Macomb, Illinois, is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region, while the WIU-Quad Cities non-residential branch campus in Moline, Illinois, is the only public university in the immediate Quad Cities region.

Western is a comprehensive university offering 62 undergraduate and 41 graduate degree programs, which includes an Ed.D. in educational leadership and a Ph.D. in environmental science. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, the University's 442 full-time faculty members teach 94 percent of all undergraduate and graduate courses.

Macomb is an Amtrak city with twice-daily service to Chicago.

WIU-Quad Cities: The only public university in the Quad Cities area, WIU-QC offers select undergraduate and graduate programs, including a doctorate in education and a doctorate in environmental studies, at its non-residential campus in Moline, IL (population 44,000).

WIU's Macomb campus is the educational, cultural and athletic center of the region. Annually, 12 major theatrical and dance productions and studio shows are performed, along with outstanding concerts, lectures, presentations, films, dance performances and more. The Gwendolyn Brooks and Casa Latina cultural centers offer programs and activities focusing on Black and Hispanic cultures, while the Women's Center promotes gender equity through education, support and advocacy. WIU's student organization for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning and ally (LGBTQ*A) community provides resources, support and programming. These cultural and resource centers promote WIU's goal of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through educational programming and advocacy.

The University's athletics program, based on the Macomb campus, sponsors 17 NCAA Division I intercollegiate men's and women's varsity sports. Football competes in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision through the Missouri Valley Football Conference; all other varsity sports compete at the Division I level through The Summit League.
