This is a full-time, managerial position and days of work and hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Note: This position is in the "NL" category of employment (non-fixed work week), and individuals in this role have no claim or entitlement to time off or cash compensation for hours worked beyond their normal schedule. Compensatory time will not be granted for work done as an extension of the regular work day. It is the policy of the College to grant hour for hour compensatory time off, with advance approval, only when employees are required to work on a holiday. Time earned must be used within one fiscal year from the time it is earned.



Starting Salary: $130,000.00 - $165,000.00

JOB SUMMARY:



Deans are responsible for the overall operations of their respective Units. As such, they are academic administrators of major importance to the College and report directly to the Provost/Vice President for Teaching, Learning & Growth. The Dean has both the authority and responsibility for planning, budgeting, scheduling, personnel matters, programs and services, instruction, development, and other academic matters.







DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



School Vision, Mission, and Planning




  • Develop, articulate, and present visions for the School of Humanities & Global Studies and Centers housed in HGS and translate these visions into strategic goals by developing unit-specific assessment plans in relation to the College's mission and Strategic Plan goals and objectives.

  • Work collegially with Program Conveners, HGS faculty, and HGS and Centers' staff to ensure collaboration and successful implementation of the Units' missions.

  • Prepare reports, plans, and analyses to document and advance HGS's and its Centers' activities, initiatives, programming, and development.

  • Actively represent HGS, its Centers, and the College to students, parents, community patrons, professional organizations, articulation partners, business and industry, and relevant constituencies.

  • Participate in college-wide and Core-wide strategic planning activities, especially as related to academic matters.

  • Develop/review academic policies and make recommendations, as appropriate, related to all-college and Division policies and procedures. Communicate with HGS faculty and staff and its Centers' staff on such matters so they are well-informed and have a change to provide input.

  • Regularly meet with the Provost to discuss initiatives, opportunities, and concerns related to HGS and its Centers. Actively participate in Provost's Council, Deans' Council, and Graduate Council meetings, initiatives, and activities.

  • Participate in Advisory Board meetings, as appropriate.

  • Collaborate with the Faculty Assembly and its leadership on college-wide academic issues.

  • Collaborate with other College Cores and Units for college-wide alignment on all-college goals and activities.

  • Advocate for HGS's and its Centers' interests and maintain or enhance the reputation of the School and its Centers' and their programs.

  • Develop external relationships for HGS and its Centers. Participate or assign a designee to participate in regional, state, and national organizations to further the role of the Humanities and the disciplines and activities represented by its Centers.



Curriculum, Academic Integrity, Course Scheduling, and Collegiality




  • Ensure academic excellence and integrity through documented School, program, and course assessment, which includes the development and implementation of operational and student learning outcomes, appropriate strategies, and feedback/close-the-loop activities.

  • Provide curricular leadership in relation to college-wide goals by initiating, sustaining, delivering, or eliminating academic programs and School Core curricula in accordance with Strategic Plan goals.

  • Supervise the Program Conveners in the construction of timely course schedules based on student needs and availability of institutional resources (e.g., faculty, classrooms and other spaces) including advisement and registration.

  • Lead the development of new curricula, programs, and initiatives and review and revise existing curricula, programs, and initiatives with Program Conveners, HGS faculty and staff, and Centers' staff, which align with student needs, community demand, grant obligations, and available resources.

  • Supervise academic program reviews and administrative assessment of the School and its Centers' operations and programming. Facilitate activities at the unit level to seamlessly integrate HGS and its Centers' goals with all-college goals.

  • Contribute to ensuring successful external accreditation.

  • Assume responsibility for the quality and integrity of all credit-bearing portions of study abroad programs developed and administered in conjunction with the Roukema Center for International Education.

  • Mediate between students, HGS faculty, HGS and its Centers' staff, and parents in legal and appropriate ways. Facilitate the resolution of disagreement or conflict between faculty, staff, and students.

  • Develop and foster a culture that embraces and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion amongst HGS faculty, HGS and its Centers' staff, and students.



Special Programs, Professional Development, and Facilities




  • Supervise the administration and operation of and ensure the academic quality of all HGS and its Centers' programs, computer labs, and spaces assigned to HGS and its Centers.

  • Oversee the College Honors Program.

  • Assume responsibility for human resource management of HGS faculty and HGS and its Centers' staff. Develop long-range staffing plans to include new faculty hires, retirements, and adequate support staff who are aligned with program delivery, enrollment, and market projections; prepare job descriptions/ads and other documentation for all positions; appoint search committees and supervise the search process; recommend the appointment of appropriately-qualified faculty and staff; and render timely, professional judgement on periodic evaluations, reappointment, tenure, promotion, and reclassification.

  • Develop appropriate and judicious staffing plans to maximize services.

  • Support HGS faculty and HGS Centers' staff in scholarly and professional development. Facilitate ongoing technological training of HGS faculty and HGS and its Centers' staff.



Fiscal Accountability




  • Assume responsibility for all fiscal matters at the unit level. This includes creating, monitoring, managing, reconciling, and being responsible for the budgets of the School (HGS), as well as all Units and programs overseen by the Dean.

  • Plan for, request, and disburse operational, travel, and other funds legally, responsibly, and fairly within given budget limitations.

  • Provide accountability and transparency in the distribution of resources assigned to HGS and its Centers.

  • Develop or oversee the development of Capital funding proposals and internal and external grant proposals to meet the needs of HGS and its Centers.

  • Develop, facilitate, and/or actively engage, as appropriate, in fundraising activities that support HGS, its Centers, and all associated programs, as well as the College in general.



Enrollment Management




  • Work closely with the Units within Enrollment Management to recruit, retain, and ultimately graduate students from HGS and Ramapo College. Collaborations with Enrollment Management include duties such as:

    • Attending and representing or assigning designees, when appropriate, to attend and represent HGS and its academic programs to prospective and accepted students and parents at official recruitment events including but not limited to Open Houses, Admitted Student Days, Presidential Scholarship Receptions, Immediate Decisions Days, and Deans' Receptions.

    • Coordinating academic advisement training sessions for all HGS faculty; overseeing the assignment of faculty advisors; and overseeing the release of advisement holds during mandatory registration;

    • Working with the Office of the Registrar to update the College Catalog, which includes a review of each Convening Group's/program's updates to ensure adherence to academic policies and curricular guidelines;

    • Adjudicating student appeals to academic policies and enforcing academic policies including serving as the final sign off on all School graduation applications; and

    • Participating in Academic Affairs and college-wide initiatives.



  • Developing external relationships for HGS that support and enhance enrollment efforts.

  • Maintain and expand established alumni networks.



DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE ACADEMIC UNIT:



The Dean of the School of Humanities & Global Studies is ultimately responsible for all facilities, maintenance, programming, and staffing of all entities related to the School. They include the Jane Addams Papers Project, the Gross Center for Holocaust & Genocide Studies, the Center for Reading & Writing, the Topken World Language Lab, and more. Supervision of several grant-funded staff positions and their responsibilities is also included.



Developing external partnerships is a vital component of the Dean's function. The Dean will actively engage in maintaining and expanding connections with appropriate regional, national, and international Humanities communities, partnering with the Ramapo College Foundation and interacting with Deans in similar positions at other institutions. The Dean of HGS is responsible to maintain and enhance the already excellent reputation of Ramapo's School of Humanities & Global Studies and its programs.



ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:




  • A record of teaching, scholarship, service to college and community, and professional responsibility equivalent to that expected at the time of tenure at Ramapo College.

  • Experience with graduate-level, online, and adult completion programs, as well as international education programs and curricula with a global focus.

  • Knowledge of disciplinary/professional trends and higher education activities on the state and national level.

  • Demonstrated commitment to the principles of a liberal arts education.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS



EDUCATION:



A terminal earned degree in the appropriate academic discipline from an accredited college or university is required.



EXPERIENCE:



A minimum of five years' experience at the equivalent of the Associate Professor or Full Professor level in a higher education environment combining academic instruction and administration, as determined by the Provost in consultation with the President.



If the candidate is from within Ramapo College, the individual must be tenured.
