About the Position:

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is committed to educating students to be culturally, globally, socially, historically and environmentally astute, civically responsible alumni able to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world.

We are seeking an exceptional individual to lead the Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Advising team focused on delivering equitable, top-notch advising for all new and continuing students. The Director of Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Advising will collaborate with the Dean's leadership team to implement the vision, goals, and objectives of academic advising in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude, an active, energetic mind, and a leadership style that is characterized by collaboration; highly ethical practices; and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness. Our Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Advising mission is to work in a collaborative partnership with students and faculty advisors to remove barriers and obstacles to graduation and support the holistic development of the student throughout their time at CSUF.

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Student Relations and the college participant on the Cal State Fullerton Advising Enterprise, the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Director of Academic Advising will work collaboratively with the Dean's leadership team to implement the vision, goals, and objectives of academic advising in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. At Cal State Fullerton, the Division of Academic Affairs empowers students to fulfill their academic goals and to pursue their personal purpose and professional aims. With this mission in mind, the Director of HSS Academic Advising will supervise and manage the operational strategies of the college's academic advising unit, continuously identifying opportunities to remove barriers to student success and to improve comprehensive advising services to students. In conjunction with college leadership, the Director will ensure students will be successful navigating their academic journey, starting at matriculation through graduation. The Cal State Fullerton academic advising enterprise is a critical unit in the university's objective to eliminate inequities in student success outcomes. Further, the Director of Academic Advising will partner with colleagues throughout the Academic Advising Enterprise to engage in the strategic implementation of identified campus wide student success initiatives.

Staff members of the HSS Advising team will report to the Director of HSS Academic Advising, who will collaborate with Associate Dean, faculty academic advisors, and other advising/counseling professionals to identify and implement strategic interventions and programs so that all students will achieve their goals to succeed academically and personally. In supervising professional academic advising staff members in the Advising Teams, the Director of HSS Academic Advising, is responsible for the development of the professional advising staff. In addition, other duties as assigned.

In addition, the Director of HSS Academic Advising will represent HSS in meetings with Directors of Academic Advising, Academic Programs, the Provosts Office, and other stakeholders across the university.


Essential Qualifications:
Master's degree from an accredited college or university in a Humanities or Social Science discipline, higher education leadership, college student development or a related field. A minimum of five years of increasing coordinator and/or managerial responsibilities, in a higher education environment. Strong understanding and experience in contributing to complex, dynamic academic advising and/or student success programs in Minority Serving Institutions (e.g. HSis, HBCUs, and AANAPISls), in particular programs to advance the academic success of first-gen students and underrepresented students. Demonstrate exemplary professionalism (to include appropriate confidentiality), commitment to equity and inclusion, lifelong learning, and self-professional development. Excellence in written and verbal communication ability, to a variety of audiences using multiple channels of communication. Ability to lead and manage multiple projects and prioritize short- and long-term goals and responsibilities with frequent interruptions.

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily and is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.


Preferred Qualifications:
Earned doctorate in a field relevant to this role. Knowledge of multiple majors in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Familiarity with professional, global industry advising standards and best practices. Proven skill in evaluating academic records. Knowledge of academic program administration and career counseling principles. Experience with data analytics and technology tools as they relate to planning, data driven program development and assessment. Experience with data analysis and appointment systems such as Educational Advisory Board, Tableau, Canvas, and PeopleSoft. Skill in examining and re-engineering operations and procedures, formulating policy, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures. Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments. Demonstrate exemplary professionalism, commitment to equity and inclusion, lifelong learning, and self-professional development. Ability to maintain confidentiality and spirit of teamwork and adaptability to change. Ability to select, supervise and train represented and non-represented staff including, organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments and assessing performance. Customer service and employee development and performance management skills. Experience in fostering a cooperative environment, develop, plan, and implement short and long-range goals, develop, and deliver presentations. Knowledge of educational theory and principles and experience in practical application of advising techniques. Knowledge of research-based evidence and frameworks about underrepresented students' trajectories and experiences in higher education.
