About the Position:

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is committed in educating students to be culturally, globally, socially, historically and environmentally astute, civically responsible alumni able to navigate an increasingly complex and interconnected world. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as the Humanities and Social Sciences College Advisor (Student Services Professional II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.

Under the direction of the College Associate Dean of Student Relations and working directly with the Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) Director of Academic Advising, the College Advisor works to support students' timely progress toward their degree. Works as a member of the College Student Success Team to review records of students to ensure they are taking the appropriate courses for their major and the appropriate graduation date selection to prevent unnecessary graduation date deferrals. Provides advising support to a subset of majors within the college, including one-on-one and small group advising, along with assisting students in identifying and declaring majors and minors. Will also support onboarding of students during orientation. This position will have access to, and maintain, a student tracking database and utilize campus advising and data analytic tools to support advising efforts. Involves developing initiatives/strategies to enhance student success. Provides reports on students supported, challenges experienced, and overall outcomes to the Associate Dean of Student Relations and the HSS Director of Academic Advising. Assists the Student Success Team in developing, implementing, and assessing programs and campaigns designed to increase retention and facilitate progress toward degree. Other duties as assigned to support the specific college and student population served by the College Advisor.


Essential Qualifications:
Bachelors degree or the equivalent from an accredited four-year college or university in one of the behavioral sciences, public administration, business administration or a job-related field and two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or a related field. A masters degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience. Additional specialized and relevant experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational management, research, and interview techniques. Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations, obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews, and advise students individually and in groups on complex student-related matters. Ability to reason logically and use initiative in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements. Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, supervise, and organize programs and activities. Ability to interact with a diverse student population, faculty, staff, and the public. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with a variety of individuals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of campus procedures, activities, and of the overall organization.

CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
